It’s October…the season for all things scary. We’ve compiled a list of frightening places across the country to visit…if you dare.
West Coast Scary:
The Rock, aka Alcatraz Island, San Francisco, CA
Infamous for daring escape attempts, there have been reports of people hearing screams, fighting, slamming doors and incidents of people being shoved and scratched!
The Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, CO
When you’ve inspired Stephen King…it’s safe to say, this place is a bit creepy. The original owners, who have long since passed, are said to have been seen playing the piano and spending time in the billiards room. Who says ghosts can’t have a good time?
Scary in the Middle:
Lewiston Civic Theatre, Lewiston, ID
Employees have seen apparitions in the theater and three unlucky souls have gone missing…never to be seen alive again! It was recently discovered that a truss in the historic building is broken and the city condemned the building…so now only the ghosts remain.
Congress Hotel, Chicago, IL
The 12th floor is said to be haunted by the ghost of a little boy. There have also been reports of a peg-leg ghost, Al Capone and a “Disco Man”, who appears as if he just left Studio 54, circa 1978.
The former owner was shot and killed by Union soldiers and the property has 11 unidentified bodies buried there. The ghost of a young bride has appeared at the house, along with a self-arranging tea set.
If you like your ghosts with a side of southern hospitality, the Hermann-Grima house in the French Quarter is the place to go. Fireplaces have reportedly been lit by unseen hands(ghosts get chilly, too) and the scent of rose and lavender has appeared inexplicably.
East Coast Scary:
Perhaps it’s because this part of the country was settled earlier, but there seem to be more haunted claims here…
The tomb of Mercy Brown, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Exeter, RI
Bram Stoker saved newspaper clippings about Mercy and H.P. Lovecraft refers to her in The Shunned House…why? Because Mercy was a vampire, or so it was believed, at the time. Visitors claim to have seen her ghost and have even heard her say, “Please leave me to rest in peace”.
Currently listed for sale, this is the house that inspired the book and movie. In the 1970s it was the site of a gruesome murder and the next family that purchased the house, reported that goo oozed from door keyholes, doors flew off their hinges, and if you’ve seen the movies…you know the rest.
Freetown-Fall River State Forest, aka: the Cursed Forest of Massachusetts, Fall River, MA
Even President Reagan reported seeing strange lights in the sky of this forest. Humanoid creatures known as Pukwedgies have been reportedly seen here, as well as a host of other apparitions, UFO sightings and creepy happenings.
Besides under the kids’ beds…what is the scariest place in your area?
