THE 8 MUST-HAVES EVERY GUY NEEDS IN HIS CLOSET

We’re on the brink of a new season, and with that comes trends…new and now items to add to your wardrobe. But what about the basics? We’ve put together a quick check list of classic items that are the foundation of any wardrobe. Don’t worry, we’ll keep you posted on all the new arrivals and must-haves for fall later in September, but for now…let’s review the essentials.

A WHITE DRESS SHIRT

Pressed and polished for the office, date night, special occasions, Sunday services and much more. This classic button-down looks great suited up with a tie, casually with the top button undone and worn with jeans, or even with the sleeves rolled up and paired with shorts and boat shoes. The bonus here: Most are available in wrinkle-resistant fabrics, saving you time.

PATTERNED SPORT SHIRT

You can’t go wrong with a classic pattern. Think plaids, checks, ginghams and stripes…this shirt also does double-duty as a reliable go-to during the workweek or a casual standby for days off.

SOME KHAKI PANTS

Another easy dress-up/dress-down must-have. Whether you like the streamlined style of a flat-front or prefer pleats, twill khaki pants work overtime in every wardrobe. Wear with a blazer for work or dinner, play it down with a polo or sport shirt on the weekends.

THE NAVY BLAZER

This versatile topper is virtually seasonless. Pair it with a dress shirt for work, over a sport shirt when you’re meeting friends out, or over a tee for a laid-back, yet totally put-together vacation look. It works with lightweight wool gabardine dress pants, twill pants, jeans or even shorts.

TREND-RIGHT DARK-WASHED JEANS

Time to retire any pair that’s acid washed or pleated. Stonewash or a dark wash remain a staple in denim year after year. The five-pocket style is your best bet, with not too much distressing or worn-in features.

A STACK OF POLOS

You don’t have to be a tennis player or hold a country club membership to pop your collar on this dependable style. From technically-treated, moisture-wicking polos designed for the golf course to classic cotton piqué knits for every day, this casual style with bit of a preppy edge has long been hailed as a year-round favorite.

A STATEMENT-MAKING GRAPHIC TEE

You need a day-off tee. One with a worn-in look and feel that personifies who you are. Maybe it features your favorite band, team, a comic book hero you idolized as a kid or a movie you’ve seen a hundred times. Wear it solo or layer it up under a patterned shirt for a laid-back casual look.

THE DARK SUIT

This sophisticated standard will get you through big moments. Job interviews, big presentations, weddings and yes, even funerals. Invest in a classic and you’ll have it for years. A two-button front sport coat and flat-front trousers outlast any fad.

There. That should get you started…or maybe you need to refresh a few of these items. Don’t forget the top-drawer necessities like underwear, crisp white T-shirts and socks. And, of course, the right shoes. A good-looking wardrobe starts from the ground up.

What about a casual vest with jeans, not a sweater but an actual vest like he’s wearing in pic!

I find it interesting that the big and tall model is built, when most shopping at DXL are actually big and tall like myself (tall and over weight), not tall and a body builder.
